How Shakespeare is born: work in progress
The non-acting students of the Theatre Faculty JAMU created a puppet theatre performance called How Shakespeare is born: work in progress under the direction of Patrick Sims. The project is a co-production of the Theatre World Brno festival, the French ensemble Les Antliaclastes, the Czech Centre in Paris and the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts, and it will be presented in Hérisson and in Paris.
At the beginning there was a first folio and a portrait. Droeshout’s portrait. And then? The Shakespeare phenomenon. An author whose works are known the world over and are still required reading across continents. But who’s really behind them, we don’t know for sure. Poor Shaxper of Stratford-upon-Avon, Francis Bacon, a collective of women authors, a member of the royal family hiding behind a mask – or is it all still very different? Who do we believe in? And do we even need to know?

More information about the performance:
A poetic story of Jewish refugee Ruth Maier in a parallel to the diaries of today’s girls.
Ruth Maier was born more than a hundred years ago, but her story still resonates with us. Aside from the wartime suffering associated with her Jewish ancestry, she was dealing with similar issues in her diary to that addressed by the girls of today. Family relationships, love and friendship, school joys and sorrows, dance classes, literature, theatre, trips, skiing, and, above everything else, the meaning of life. Her inner desire was for a world free of violence, war and oppression and her search for ways to be useful and helpful to others. That is a memento of the diary that has grown into a permanent message.
The theatrical production of Girl’s Diary is primarily inspired by the book The Diary of Ruth Maier by Norwegian writer Jan Erik Vold and is created by the Theatre and Education for the Deaf programme It uses speech and sign language, also elements of movement theatre, pantomime and visual expression. It is designed for both deaf and hearing audiences.

#Svobodays project and its meeting in Lyon
The Theatre Faculty JAMU is involved in the international project #Svobodays realized within Erasmus+ programme. The Svobodays are travelling thematic days based on the work of the famous Czech scenographer Josef Svoboda. The aim is to question the links between scenography, light and advanced technologies, and the way they are taught in higher education. In December 2022, a meeting of the project’s partner schools (ENSATT Lyon, JAMU Brno and ESAD Seville) took place in Lyon, where the schools presented models and mini theatre scenes based on the works of Josef Svoboda. The meeting focused on the scenography history but as well on contemporary practices, with a program of round tables and communications, which brought together artists, manufacturers, developers, teachers and students in performing arts and technology.
More information about the project is available here and about the meeting here.

Ukrainian students performed their production Pray Louder
On Sunday, June 19, 2022, a theatre performance Pray Louder by Ukrainian students took place at the Orlí Street Theatre. These students of art disciplines from various Ukrainian universities were forced to leave Ukraine as a result of the war conflict, and they began to carry out short-term study stays at our faculty. The performance reflected the current situation of Ukrainian students. The creative process was based on their ideas, feelings, and dreams. Physical and collective improvisation was an important tool for exploring the themes and it became a part of the performance, which the students prepared under the pedagogical supervision of MgA. Adéla Kratochvílová, Ph.D., MgA. Dalibor Buš, MgA. Adam Mašura and Mgr. BcA. Pavol Seriš, Ph.D. The performance was held in the personal presence of the Ukrainian Consul in Brno, Ms. Anna Proshko.
